Description

Quandongs: A Native Australian Fruit

Quandong, also known as wild peaches, are small desert trees native to Australia. Let’s explore their unique characteristics:

The Quandong has been a staple in our life since early childhood. There was always jars of delicious fruit concoctions at the local CWA, country shows and school fetes. My Aunties and the mums of my friends had the chutneys and jams with red checked cloths over the lids.  Quandong recipes are getting more adventurous in the 21 Century with recipes such as sorbets, ice creams, custards and cakes.

Demographic and Growth

  • The trees have rough dark bark, elongated hanging leaves, and small cup-shaped cream flowers.
  • The fruit is bright scarlet fruit is about 2 cm in diameter and contains a large nut or kernel.

Nutritional Value

  • Vitamin C: Quandongs are highly nutritious, containing twice the vitamin C of an orange.
  • Kernel: The kernel is also nutritious and was traditionally used for medicinal purposes by indigenous Australians

Culinary Uses

Quandongs offer a delightful blend of sweet and tart flavors, making them versatile in the kitchen:

  1. Quandong Pie: A classic dessert, serve it with cream and ice cream.
  2. Quandong Sauce: Glaze roast lamb or pork with this flavorful sauce.
  3. Scones with Quandong Jam: Enjoy these delightful treats.
  4. Chili Dipping Sauce: Pair it with spring rolls or chicken wings. For our packets, rehydrate the kibble with water to cover, sugar to taste, then add some sweet soy – kecap manis – and chili salt and you have a dipping sauce with a noticeable level of difference.  Chili Salt – 50g – Pincha Salt
  5. In Cakes and Salads: Grate or shred quandong flesh for added flavor.
  6. Foot Massages and Toothache Relief: Quandongs have diverse uses beyond the kitchen

Remember to use quandongs sparingly due to their strong flavor. Whether in sweet or savory dishes, these native fruits add a unique twist to your meals!
